Google Giant Goes Gone Again
May 18th, 2009

Last week’s Google outage may have slowed the rest of the world wide wibble to a crawl. After an outtage last Thursday, it appears Google has yet to fix the error as it has again this Monday morning affected users around the world.

According to security outfit Abornetworks, five percent of Internet traffic was lost for an hour and a half on Thursday when Google’s network went down. Most large transit providers appear to have been impacted. Part of the problem was that Google not only has shedloads of traffic visiting its webpage, it also has loads of other people’s websites through its Adsense program. Topday, the outtage was much more vast in the regions of users affected, reporting Google News was primarily affected with the outtage.

The technical glitch brought down Google’s homepage and virtually halted services such as Usenet Newsgroups service, Google Groups, its search site, email, YouTube and Google News; all performing sluggishly or unavailable to many users.

Many newsgroup communities were in unison with complaints about the outtage and the company.

The Mountain View, California-based search giant did not provide any more details about the partial outage, but on their “offical” blog, Google staff used the analogy of “planes piling up over Asia” to explain the meltdown.

After the hour and a half outtage, Google Groups newsgroups were again available via web, although the Usenet feeds stayed consistent.

The company was being notoriously coy about how many users were affected and for how long the service was affected. With this new outtage this morning, which began around 8:30am and seems to have been fixed by 9:30AM EST still remains to be explained fully as well.
